Penelope Umbrico
Penelope Umbrico takes the stance of a photographer, but within the world of consumer marketing media. Umbrico travels through the relentless flow of seductive images, objects and information that continuously surrounds us, searching for clues as to who we collectively are. Penelope Umbrico devises systems in which image, object, or information is excised and re-contextualized. Taking the parts of images that are used in consumer media as peripheral devices to elicit desire, Umbrico points to the construct of desire by making these fragments into the desired object.
In 2004 Peneope Umbrico was appointed Chair of MFA Photography at Bard College's Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts. Umbrico has also taught photography at Columbia University, Cooper Union, Parsons School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design and New York University.
